Piston Pins- The Correct Call For An Enhanced Engine Performance

Piston Pins- the correct call for an enhanced engine performance

An engine is regarded as a power plant of an automobile. An automotive engine has witnessed tremendous changes ever since it was launched a few decades ago but every combustion engine till date has three key requirements which must be met for performing their job to provide power-fuel, air and ignition. The amalgamation of fuel and air are compressed inside an engine for making it highly combustible. For proper maintenance of combustion engines, Piston Pins are a must.

Although a piston pin appears simple and small but these play a crucial role in the trouble-free performance of the engine. Mechanically, it is a very simple constituent and in its most basic form is a short length of simple, solid bar. A piston pin should be hard for providing the desired wear and tear qualities but at the same time, it should not be too brittle.

Methods for retaining the piston pin

Designed for securing the pistons to small ends of connecting rods and also providing wrist-like action needed amid the two parts, there are different methods utilized for retaining piston pins of which the two most commonly used includes;

  • Floating pin- Here a piston pin is carefully arranged for floating in the piston as well as the eye of a connecting rod. The circlips in piston bosses hold on to the piston pin thereby preventing it to get in touch with the cylinder wall.
  • Press fit pin- Here the pin is press fit in a connecting rod and thereby floats in a piston. The connecting rod is tightly fit and thus is capable of retaining the pin along with preventing it from moving. The press fit pin method is mostly used in engines of light commercial vehicles and passenger cars.

The need to lubricate piston pins

During the installation of new piston pins, it is highly imperative that the pins are properly oiled especially while it passes via the piston as a failure to lubricate it adequately will result in seized pistons almost every time which may cause the engine to break.

Generally a piston pin rests on oil and splash mist for lubrication yet there are few which are pressure lubricated. Here a passage is drilled in the connecting rod which helps the oil to flow towards the piston pin. For engines having a piston cooling jet, the oil which is directed via the jet aids to cool the piston as well as lubricates the piston pins. By keeping a piston pin cool, a piston is capable of generating maximum horsepower without any heat-related engine breakdown.

Being aware of the fact that a piston pin plays a crucial role for the utmost performance of an engine, the manufacturers ensure that highest standards are rightly met via technological leaderships in every manufacturing discipline related to piston pins fabrication.
